10 Thought Control Tips from As a Man Thinketh

James Allen was a visionary when he published his 1903 manuscript on thought and its effect on men.

What advice would Allen have for modern professionals?

1. We are what we think

“As a man thinketh in his heart so is he.” ~ James Allen

What we pontificate on in our brains every day forms the building blocks for our faily actions. These actions help to shape us into who we truly are, every…single…day.

2. We are the tools of our own destruction…or renaissance

“Man is made or unmade by himself; in the armoury of thought he forges the weapons by which he destroys himself; he also fashions the tools with which he builds for himself heavenly mansions of joy and strength and peace.” ~ James Allen

Our thoughts dictate if we buiold our dream or seek our downfall. Given that we are the maker and master of these thoughts we ultimately are in control of our fate…no one else!

3. Our circumstances do not dictate who we are

“A man cannot directly choose his circumstances, but he can choose his thoughts, and so indirectly, yet surely, shape his circumstances.” ~James Allen

If we truly believe our lives are controlled by external factors and not our internal thoughts, we will never truly control our lives.

4. We attract what we are

“Men do not attract that which they want, but that which they are.” ~ James Allen

We think grand thoughts, of success, growth and riches, but rarely reinforce such thoughts by corresponding action. This means that we are stuck as who we are not who we want to be. We can only truly change when our thoughts and actions are pair toward the same end result.

5. Improve yourself; Improve your circumstances

“Men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves; they therefore remain bound.” ~ James Allen

Seeking to improve your current situation? Then begin by looking in the mirror. Often to improve our current circumstances this means we must incur significant personal sacrifice now to reap the benefits later.

6. Do good and good will follow

“Good thoughts and actions can never produce bad results; bad thoughts and actions can never produce good results.” ~ James Allen

If you think positively it will eventually result in something good; the inverse is true if you hold on to negative thoughts. Creating and maintaining a positive outlook in any situation will give you power to make even the worst situations a positive.

7. Your thoughts are never secret

“Men imagine that thought can be kept secret, but it cannot; it rapidly crystallizes into habit, and habit solidifies into circumstance.” ~ James Allen

No matter how much we attempt to hide our thoughts they will give rise to behaviors and actions that reinforce whatever thought we harbor. This means that by simply having, harboring and cultivating thoughts based upon growth, happiness, success and plenty will result in positive circumstances that reflect these thoughts.

8. Thought with a purpose will create an action

“A man should conceive of a legitimate purpose in his heart, and set out to accomplish it… Until thought is linked with purpose there is no intelligent accomplishment.” ~ James Allen

The linking of thought to a desired purpose can help manifest positive progress thoughts which result in positive progressive actions. In this way purpose focuses thoughts on a single target creating efficient effective actions.

9. Our thoughts are our own

“A man's weakness and strength, purity and impurity, are his own, and not another man's; they are brought about by himself, and not by another; and they can only be altered by himself, never by another.” ~ James Allen

No one else is responsible for our thoughts. No matter the action, circumstance or situation set against us; we determine how we process and address the subsequent thoughts we harbor.

10. Remain Diligent

“Victories attained by right thought can only be maintained by watchfulness. Many give way when success is assured, and rapidly fall back into failure.” ~ James Allen

The process of creating, maintaining and acting upon right thoughts is never over. It is up to use to fight this daily battle over who we will become. Even after you feel you have mastered positive thinking you must remain diligent or negative thoughts will once again beset you.

The fundamental effect of thought on our day to day actions and circumstances is so frequently overlooked by medical professionals. The impact of thought on how we process the world and act within it has not changed since James Allen wrote his brilliant manuscript in 1903.

Begin to seek control over your thoughts today and you will begin to practice medicine at a level you never thought possible!
